The IT HOUSE is a precision building system custom tailored to each client and site, design by Taalman Koch Architecture. The IT HOUSE functions as a highly refined structure for enhancing the visual and physical relationship to the natural environment.
The juxtaposition of glass walls with solid panel walls and partitions sets up a visually dynamic and flexible framework that enhances the everyday experience with the surrounding landscape and allows for multiple layers of privacy throughout the space.
The IT HOUSE can be completely off-grid, generating its own heating and energy reinforcing the goal of achieving a minimal building footprint. Energy efficiency is achieved in the IT House through passive heating and cooling, utilizing site orientation and cross ventilation, radiant floor heating, hi-efficacy appliances & equipment and the use of solar photovoltaic & thermal panels.
Given the lightness and simplicity of the IT HOUSE, it can be built on remote difficult sites. The construction process leaves almost no traces on the landscape, and allows natural features to be preserved.
The essential components of the IT HOUSE are the flexible aluminum frame, both for structure and wall framing, an acoustical steel deck roof, aluminum framed glazing system primarily consisting of large sliding doors, panelized enclosure system, and built in cabinetry. The framing system can be used to easily create fully or lightly enclosed spaces, exterior courtyards or screened in porches.
All of the components are fabricated and finished off site and assembled on site using minimal tools – there is no welding, all connections are bolted.
The post and beam framing and structural decking of the IT HOUSE generates a flexible open plan that is free from the need of bearing walls, and can easily integrate with cabinetry and a wide range of finishes. Primary panel materials are fiber cement board, 3form resin panels, and solid wood thin paneling.
The basic Component Package starts as a 2 bedroom, 1 bath, double courtyard IT HOUSE at 1,200sf. The IT HOUSE Component Package includes all the prefabricated and modular parts needed to build the basic shell and interior of the IT HOUSE.
ENERGY SYSTEMS AND ENVIRONMENTAL PRINCIPALS
The IT HOUSE environmental design starts with passive strategies. With smart orientation and layouts the energy needs of the IT HOUSE outperform conventional construction’s energy loads. High summer sun is blocked with deep overhangs and insulated glass units with exterior coatings that block solar heat gain. Low winter sun is collected through southern facing glass walls. Cross ventilation for cooling the space is achieved with careful placement of courtyards and large sliding glass doors.
Active strategies for minimizing energy usage are radiant floor heating and hi-efficacy appliances and fixtures. These inherently efficient systems for heating, cooling and power are then augmented through the use of solar thermal and solar photovoltaic panels.
The IT HOUSE can be built on remote off-grid sites and on grid-tied sites. Energy systems integrate seamlessly with the structural framing system in order to create a fully integrated energy system that can also provide overhead shading in the courtyards. Applying off-grid solutions to a grid tied or off-grid site enables a self-sustaining model for closed loop, low energy use living.
Solar photovoltaic panels for electrical power can be mounted using the same structural framing system that ties directly into the structural system of the house, creating a seamless aesthetic and allowing the system to be expandable and adaptable for future needs. The solar panels doubly function as a shade structure. Systems can also be ground mounted.
Solar thermal panels for domestic hot water and heating needs integrate with radiant floor heating systems or radiator systems and can provide pre-heated water or heat large storage tanks for all your heating needs.
